Flag Etiquette

Thought I would share some Interesting facts about the American flag. Hope you're all enjoy this long week end. Mr.K and I are laying low today. I've got some orders to work on so that's probably what I will do.

No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
(e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
(f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.
(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

Sharing My Last Etsy Purchase

So, I've had my eye on this little wall vase from OldNewAgain for sometime now and decided to finally purchase and I am so glad I did. Isn't It adorable. All In Favor For A Lazy Day Say .....I

Mr. K and I sometimes have what we call a lazy day where we do very little. So today Is one of those days. Sure I'll take care of him as usual but that's about It....lol
Today we will watch movies, read magazines, listen to music an just plain relax and do what ever we want. I love It ! So treat yourself sometime to a lazy day, you will be glad you did.

My Life Living With ALS... Continued

Over the next few months we saw gradual changes In Mr.K. Most of the changes were happening with his breathing and the lack of use In his hand's. At this point he could no longer stand on his own. The muscles In his legs quit working entirely. We were both scared of what was to come of our life as we knew It. Thinking to myself does every ALS patient progress like this. Later I did find out that no two ALS patients every progress the same. Some times the breathing was affected sometimes the limbs are. We had limb onset which Is the better one to have, as If one was better to have then the other. Two months down the road and we were getting ready for our next appointment with the neurologist. The morning was smooth no major problems. I got Mr.K In the car and headed for the doctor.

Sweet Potato Casserole

So today I will be making my sweet potato casserole for Easter Dinner, which Is at our home. If you've never had this you don't know what your missing. It Is delicious.
I always make It a couple of days before I need It so that I can spread my work load out a little. I thought I would share the recipe with you today In case you might like to make It for your Easter dinner.

Ingredients:

3 cups mashed sweet potatoes
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter
.
Topping:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup melted butter
1 cup chopped pecans
Preparation:
Combine first 6 ingredients. Pour into a buttered 1 1/2 to 2-quart casserole dish. Mix remaining ingredients together and sprinkle over top. Bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes, until hot and browned.
Serves 6 to 8.

Hello Everyone,

It Is my hope to get back Into blogging and continue to share my story with you. Mr.K and I are doing great. The reason why I let up on the blogging Is I had way to many irons In the fire, so they say and something just had to give. We were approaching the winter months and those are always the tricky ones. I have to make sure that I keep Mr.K away from all those germs. We have managed to keep them away with not one problem, thank the Lord. So with that said I will slowly getting back Into blogging a couple times a week, which I dearly love. I will be out and about getting caught up on all the blogs I follow too.

Have Baby Monitor Will Travel

The baby monitor you just have to love It. It was one of the first things I purchased when we came home from the hospital almost seven years ago and I can honestly say I can't live without It. My monitor Is digital and will go up to 2000 feet, will It, I'm not sure. 2000 feet seems like a long distance. I can't be that far away from my home because of course If Mr.K needed me I would have to get back quickly and I can only run so fast. My baby monitor allows me to go outside and work In my garden. My baby monitor allows be to go to my studio and created beautiful thing's. My baby monitor allows me go down stairs where my washer and dryer are. My baby monitor allows be to take a shower everyday. My baby monitor allows me to do so many things and I am so grateful to who ever Invented It.

Hospital Report

We made It to the hospital with no problems. Mr.K had his bronchoscopy and everything Is fine. There were a few changes In the way his Trach Is resting and that Is what Is causing the numbers to Increase. Our Pulmonologist said everything else looked great. I am so glad that that Is over and so Is Mr.K.

Going To The Hospital

Mr.K has been having some problems. Over the last eight months one of the numbers on the ventilator has been going up. This Is a number that tells me how easy It Is to deliver a breath into the lungs the lower the number the easier It Is to deliver the breath. I called the Pulmonologist last Tuesday and ask for a chest X ray. The technician came to our home and did the X ray and It was perfectly clear, which Is great, but why Is the number keep going up. The Pulmonologist said that If we did a bronchoscopy the number would most likely come down. A bronchoscopy Is a procedure that clears your bronchial tubes. The procedure Is out patient but I still have to take him to the hospital which I hate. We both have had our H1N1 and flu vaccine so that makes me feel a little better. It's been cold and rainy here and It Is suppose to be that way Wednesday, which I don't like taking him out In that kind of weather. If I didn't feel that this procedure was beneficial to Mr.K I wouldn't take him.

I've been trying to prepare myself for this since Tuesday. We've not been back to the hospital for any procedures since the feeding tube and the trach surgeries seven years ago.

That's all for now but I will be back with an update after the procedure.

We made It to the car and pulled out of the parking lot heading toward the pharmacy to fill the prescription. The car ride was quiet until Mr.K said, I think we should sell our business. We had a sporting good store that we owned and operated. I said, I don't think we should. I was certainly not ready for that change. If we sold our business then people would find out about Mr.K. Still thinking If we didn't talk about It everything would be just find. I walked to the counter of the drug store to pick up the prescription. As I approached the counter I'm thinking, now the pharmacist knows that Mr.K has ALS. Will he say something to me, will he act like nothings wrong will he feel sorry for me. He came over to where I was standing and quietly said do you have any questions about this medication. I said no, only because the doctor had already told us about It. Ten years down the road and that same pharmacist Is still there and now knows me by name. He has helped me so many times when I just had a quick question about a medication that I was giving Mr.K.

Later on that evening we were eating dinner. By this time Mr.K was having trouble swallowing. The muscles were getting weaker making It harder for him to eat. I looked over at Mr.K and he was choking and couldn't catch his breath. Panic went over me. I stood up and did the Heimlich It wasn't working. I kept doing It. Finally I got It. Thank you God for giving me the strength to know what to do. Mr.K calmed down finally catching his breath. Try to Imagine chocking and not being able to catch your breath. Mr.K's breathing was being effected my the disease so his breathing was only about half of we would be able to breath.

Mr.K looked at me and said, I'm sorry I scared you. Thank you for saving my life.

Fabulous Etsy Find

So I've had my eye on this mirror for a while from RowansRoom on Etsy and was finally able to purchase It. It's every bit that I thought It would be and then some.

Each mirror is handcrafted from an antique cabinet door (which makes this an environment friendly item). Most of the doors are over 100 years old, and they reflect those years through their unique beauty. Along with the mirror I purchased this beautiful decorative nail.

I love the mossy green ribbon. I am absolutely thrilled with this fabulous Etsy find.

There was a knock on the door the doctor walked In reaching out to shake both of our hands. I noticed that Mr.K wasn't able to extend his arm out to shake the doctors hand, was It happening already, have the muscles stopped working already. A wash of emotion went over me. I was scared, scared to open my mouth and speak, scared to ask any questions of fear of the answer.

The doctor examined Mr.K and ask some questions. Have you noticed any tingling In your arms or legs, any uncontrollable emotions such as laughing or crying, trouble swallowing, tripping or falling. I had briefly come across some of these symptoms while on the Internet but the truth Is It scared me so bad I clicked right out of the site. I wasn't ready to see how my once healthy husband In the prime of his life was going to leave me. Mr.K answered the doctor, yes I have notices some tingling In my arms and legs, yes I have tripped, all symptoms just verifying that yes, my husband does have ALS. The doctor told us that he was gong to prescribe a medication called Rilutek. Rilutek slows the progressing of the disease down. Studies show It prolongs your life by three months. What the doctor didn't tell us Is that the medication cost $849.00 a month. All I have to say to that Is thank goodness for Insurance. The doctor told us that he wanted to see us In two months. We made our appointment and started toward our car.

Two months have past and It was time for our second Doctors appointment. Thinking about some of the things I might ask the doctor but to afraid to ask. Did I really want to no the answers, I don't think so. I'm not ready yet. Still coming to grips that my husband has a terminal Illness. Again, how did this happen to us. At this point In the disease I was just starting to do some of Mr.K's care. Have you ever tried to put contacts Into someone else's eyes, It's not easy. We pulled Into the parking lot of the doctors office I helped Mr.K out of the car because his legs were getting really weak and could hardly hold him up. I sat him In the wheelchair and rolled him through the door. I positioned him In the waiting area while I went to the desk to tell them we had arrived. Standing there I am wondering how many times I would be doing this, would these people become our friends are they looking at me feeling sorry for me, which I never wanted. Waiting just a few minutes In the waiting area the nurse came to get us. I stood up and grabbed the wheelchair and rolled him back to the room where we waited quietly for the doctor to come In.

We sat on the couch for several hours talking about the heartbreaking news we were just told. Should we call our lawyer and make sure our affairs are In order. I can remember hearing that on television shows, now I was the one that had to do It. How would I be able to do all these things. What would people say to me. If I didn't tell anyone would It just go away. My heart was so heaving, I could feel It. My mind would start wondering, how did this happen to us. The months went by with the progression of the disease taking over my husbands body. We spoke very little about what was going on. We were In denial, serious denial or at least I was.

I apologize I haven't been posting regularly or leaving comments, Mr.K keeps me pretty busy along with my Etsy shop. I also started doing more wholesale orders as well as still working on my web site. Take care.

A Day At The Spa Review

My sister picked me up around 11:30 am. I had Mr.K all ready for the day for his brother to sit with him while I was gone. First we had our one hour facials and that was amazing. After that we had our pedicures. It was very relaxing. We left there and went shopping for a while and then went to dinner. I arrived home around 6:30, eight phone calls later, It was me that did all the calling. I worry that he Isn't comfortable or he needs something. His brother Is so good to him, they really have a great time together. It was a perfect birthday.

As I walk towards Mr. K I wrapped my arms around him and cried along with him with an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach. Up until this point I had never seen him cry. I grabbed his hand and lead him to the couch as we sat thinking how our lives would change. We had decided not to tell anyone until we were ready to explain what ALS was without crying every time. We needed that time for us to grieve. We were losing a part of our lives that we would never get back. What would we do, how would we manage. God please give me the strength and courage to get through everyday. I remember saying that prayed several times a day. Only It was, God please give me the strength and courage to get through this day. Jump ahead ten years later. God did give me the strength, courage and guidance to make It through everyday for the last ten years. Now keep In mind that typical life expectancy Is two to five years. Looking back on that day on the couch I have learned so much over the last ten years and have done some amazing things. God gave Mr.K and I this task of making a difference, making a difference In the lives of people that struggle everyday to live with ALS.

As we pulled out of the parking lot my mind started to wonder was this going to be our last Thanksgiving and Christmas together. What would I do without Mr. K how could I live. He's the other half of my heart I can't survive without him, I know I can't. Please God don't take him from me. The car ride was silent. What was he thinking, maybe the same things I was. As we pulled Into the driveway Mr. K quietly said I will be In, I need a minute. I got out of the car and walk In the house. Wanting to know so badly If he was OK I peeked out the window. As I looked at him through the glass I could see the tears running down his face. He stayed In the car for about an hour all awhile I was thinking should I go to him, should I comfort him, does he need me. I heard the front door open and Mr.K made his way through the doorway looking at me and softly saying, I am so sorry.

Spousal Caregiver Bill Signed

After three long years Bill HB39 has been signed by the Governor of Illinois. This Is the Bill that I've been working with Senator Koehler to pass. What this means for me and others like me Is the state of Illinois will now pay me to care for my husband Instead of hired help. It Is a great victory. Here Is the original post about the Bill.

My Life Living With A.L.S...Continued

As the doctor continued to speak It was like I was In a tunnel everything was an echo my life as I knew It was flashing before my eyes. So many questions but terrified to ask. If I didn't speak about this and told no one well It wouldn't be true.
The nurse walked In and Introduced herself and said she would be the nurse that would be helping with Mr.K's care, what does that mean I said to myself helping with his care. Why Is he going to need help, what Is going to happen to my husband all questions that were running around In my head. She handed us some literature to read about A.L.S. and the doctor said he would like us to come back In two months. I remember Mr.K shaking the doctors hand and saying thank you. What was he thanking him for he just delivered his death sentence. We walk to the receptionist area and made our next appointment walk to the car and started for home.

I apologize I haven't been posting as much I've been terribly busy with Mr.K. We have had some ventilator problems.

My Life With A.L.S.

It was a crisp autumn day. November 15th, 1998 to be exact. We walked Into the doctors office waiting patiently In the waiting room for the doctor to see us. Mr. K and I were both so quiet what was he going to tell us, would our lives be changed forever or would they stay the same happy, carefree and not a care In the world. Our lives were perfect.

The nurse called Mr. K's name and I can remember I couldn't stand up as hard as I tried I couldn't get out of the chair. After taking a deep breath and saying a prayer for God to give me strength I got up walking toward the door of the examining room the nurse politely said the doctor will be right In. About ten very quiet minutes later In walks the doctor shakes both of our hands and sits down. He starts speaking, after running all the test I now have a confirmed diagnoses....A.L.S.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. My body went numb I couldn't move I couldn't speak I just sat there In total shock. Mr. K was so calm and so brave. The first thing he said to the doctor was, that's terminal Isn't It. The doctor replied with a sympathetic yes.

One day she was on one of her beach excursions and she suddenly discovered she had lost her keys. Our ALS Walk Team Kup & Company

Do you ever feel out of touch with the world. That's whats going on with me right now. I rarely go out, maybe a couple of times a month, because the truth Is I simply do not trust anyone with Mr.K. He Is so helpless he can do nothing so his life would rest In their hands. One of my worst fears Is that something would happen when I was gone and they wouldn't no what to do yet It be a very simple thing that I could of easily fixed. That truly scares me.

I feel that I know some of you really well so I thought I would start sharing a little of my life with you from time to time. The reason I never blogged about my ALS life Is because I never wanted anyone to feel sorry for me. This Is where I feel my life Is right now.

I am truly blessed to be able to stay home and care for Mr.K. When Mr.K was diagnosed I was only 37 years old. I have many challenges In my life but the rewards are so much greater. Mr.K makes me laugh, he makes me cry, he makes me smile and yes he does make me mad sometimes. God has put this task of caring for my Husband In my hands. He has given me the strength to get through each day with dignity and grace.

My life Is what It Is. I can choose to be happy or choose to be sad but It Is entirely up to me. I choose to be happy.

Today's post Is about social networking. How In the world do you keep up, You can't.
My time as It Is, Is pulled In many directions. I've been doing a lot of thinking about this, where am I going to get the most exposure. We all know If you don't keep your Etsy shop fresh you get lost In the millions of listing that have come after yours and you can't really post a tweet and run about something you posted In your shop, now that just wouldn't be proper Twitter etiquette, now would It. There Is also Face Book fan page that I recently started and Is doing great. The concept of that Is people opt In to except emails from me about sales or new jewelry listed, things like that. But the thing there Is how much Is to much, once a week, twice a week, who knows. I say stop the Insanity....yikes ! what In the world did we ever do without this technology before. Oh, there are several sites out there that tell you this exact Information but you almost need a degree to figure that out.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this and what you do.

Brothers Breakfast Today

Just a quick post today as we have the monthly "Brothers Breakfast" I have posted about this wonderful tradition before. Just a recap. Mr.K has four brothers and his father Is still living and just turned 85 In March. On the third Saturday of the month they all get together for breakfast and after come visit with their brother, their son, Mr.K.

I did get my house clean yesterday so It's full speed ahead.

My Life Is One Big Hamster Wheel

I apologize I've been MIA for the majority of the week. I really love sharing my thoughts with you everyday and reading all the blogs that I follow.

As some of you know our annual ALS walk was last Saturday. Since then I can't seem to get motivated. Sure I do all the regulars and care for Mr.K but by no means am I doing any extras. I've come to the conclusion that my life Is like one big hamster wheel. By that I mean It Is so routine. My day Is planned out to the T. I've never been one to fly by the seat of my pants and maybe that's a good thing. Because my day Is filled with so many task, most of them dedicated to Mr.K I have to stay organized and devote 110%. Now that I've had my little lazy week It's on to the next task In that big hamster wheel we call life and that Is house cleaning every Friday.

Bread Pudding

OK, so who doesn't have day old bread, eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla In their kitchen. Bread pudding Is one of my favorites and this recipe Is so simple and really tasty....Enjoy

INGREDIENTS
6 slices day-old bread
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
4 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
3/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Break bread into small pieces into an 8 inch square baking pan. Drizzle melted butter or margarine over bread. If desired, sprinkle with raisins.
In a medium mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Beat until well mixed. Pour over bread, and lightly push down with a fork until bread is covered and soaking up the egg mixture.
Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the top springs back when lightly tapped.

Sauce
1/2 cup powdered sugar
4 TB milk
1/8 Vanilla

I heat the sauce under low heat and 5 minutes before the bread pudding Is to come out of the oven I pour It over the top and return to the oven for remainder of baking time.

I'm the type of person that loves to decorate for holidays or change of season. I've been looking for the last couple of months for a summer wreath for my door and I found the perfect one at Two Inspire You This Is a wreath that will take me all the way through fall. These are two friends who find simple inspiration in the changing seasons and the colorful world around them. They opened their Etsy shop In January 2009 and are doing fabulous and I know why. The wreath I purchased Is just gorgeous. It Is full and bursting with color and texture. They have many wreaths to choose from and I have my eye on another. My Radio Interview

The walk to defeat ALS Is coming up on June 13th. I've been working hard on securing different forms of advertising from Television, radio and newspaper. Thursday I did a radio Interview on one of our local radio stations.

Let me set this Interview up for you.

Mr.K and I worked at a restaurant In the down town area for about twenty years. This was a very popular restaurants and MR.K was the GM and I was In charge of the wait staff. We met so many wonderful people while there Including many celebrities. Mr.K left that business In 1998 to open our sporting good store here In Illinois. I stayed at the restaurant until the following year when I then went and worked full time at our store. I have always worked side my side with Mr.K In all of our careers so when we had to be home full time because of the ALS It was not a huge adjustment because we were use to that. This Interview was done my Jayme Markley of WMBD 1470. We have known Jayme for many many years because he worked at another radio station that did a lot of our advertising for both the restaurant and later at our store.

This Interview really tells more of the personal side of the disease what we live with and how we manage. I hope you enjoy It.

Pretty Flower

Isn't that the cutest name for a mobile dog groomer. Every six weeks Penny, our mobile dog groomer comes and gives Savannah a bath, we tell her she Is going to the spa. How nice, not even I get a day at the spa let alone one every six weeks. This Is so convenient for me. I don't have to ask someone to sit with Mr.K. Penny does a wonderful job and Is so nice. Sometimes I wish I was a little mouse so I could hear what they talk about when she's bathing her.

Quiet Breakfast

Sunday morning I usually like to have a small breakfast and my coffee before Mr.K wakes. I like to sit In quiet and reflected back on the week. What did I accomplish this week, what did I postpone for another day, how did Mr.K's week go, any major problems with him, things like that.

Today for my quiet breakfast I had a bagel with strawberry fruit spread. Have you ever tried Brummel & Brown fruit spread made with strawberries and yogurt. It really Is fabulous....yummy !

Today I will be finishing up In my studio. I have some new pieces I need to photograph and list. The sun Is shinning today It Is a beautiful day here In the heart land. Thank you God for all your beauty.

Brothers Breakfast

Mr.K and I feel so blessed to have our wonderful families. On the third Saturday of every month all the brothers and Mr.K's Dad go to breakfast and after their finished they all come to visit with Mr.K.

This Is besides the Brothers Breakfast. For the last six years one of them has been here every Saturday. They all sit down and make a schedule out for three months In advance and one of them Is always here on Saturday to spend some one on one time with Mr.K. They watch movies, surf the web and read magazines things like that. Our families are very close and they have helped us walk through are journey a little easier.

It has finally stopped raining here and the sun Is shining bright. Hope your enjoying your week end,

My Gift

This Is the Mothers Day gift I received from Mr.K, care of my sis. It Is a vase/frame. It holds a 4X6 photo but right now I have a postcard In It. When I was out last week I purchased these beautiful pink silk geraniums to display since we can't have real flowers In our home, to many crazy allergies.

Today I will be In my studio cleaning and organizing, how does one person get so messy. It's raining again so I guess It's a good day to clean. Have a great week end,

Sleeping Beauties

As I had mentioned yesterday that It had been raining, so with that In mind what else Is there to do but take a little nap. Tinkerbelle Is laying on Mr.K's lap and Savannah Is In her favorite spot and me well I never get the luxury of napping to many things to do. My to do list consisted of getting packages ready to ship, listing a few pieces In my Etsy shop darkening some brass and answering emails. As I was passing by Mr.K's bed and yes he was napping too, how could I resist, I had to take a few photos of the girl's.

Our girl's bring us so much joy and happiness. They are both rescues and fit right In our home since day one. Just another piece of the puzzle.

Lilacs Smell So Good

I really had a full bush this year and they smell so good despite all the talk about the very bitter cold winter was going to be really hard on the flowering bushes. May Is National ALS Awareness Month

Some of you already know that my husband, Mr.K was diagnosed In 1999 with ALS better known as Lou Gerhig's Disease. I am my husbands caregiver, advocate, friend, wife, banker, doctor, nurse, secretary and comedian. As a caregiver I wear many hat's.
I thought I would share today with you some Information you may not know about ALS.

1 Every 90 minutes someone Is diagnosed with ALS.

2 Every 90 minutes someone dies from ALS.

3 Typical life expectancy Is two to five years.

4 ALS Is one of the most expensive disease. To adequately care for someone In your home with ALS It Is an annual cost of $250 thousand dollars. Thank goodness for Insurance.

5 ALS robs you of your ability to breath, eat, swallow or move.

6 ALS does not effect your mind.

7 There Is no known cause or cure for ALS.

8 There Is only one FDA approved medication for ALS, this medication slows down the progression of ALS and typically adds 3 months on to a patients life.
The cost of this medication Is $940.00 monthly. Again, thank goodness for Insurance.

I have many more facts about ALS but thought I would share just a few of them with you today. Like I said In the title, May Is national ALS awareness month so I thought I would raise some awareness on my blog of this terriable disesase.

Baked French Toast

I made this today and It was fabulous. I cut the recipe in half because there was only two of us. Enjoy

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
1 (1 pound) loaf French bread, cut diagonally in 1 inch slices
8 eggs
2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups half-and-half cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 cup butter
1 1/3 cups brown sugar
3 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 cup chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS
Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish. Arrange the slices of bread in the bottom. In a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk, cream, vanilla and cinnamon. Pour over bread slices, cover, and refrigerate overnight.
The next morning, preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a small saucepan, combine butter, brown sugar and corn syrup; heat until bubbling. Pour over bread and egg mixture add pecans on top.
Bake in preheated oven, uncovered, for 40 minutes.

May Day

May 1st, often called May Day, just might have more holidays than any other day of the year. It's a celebration of Spring. It's a day of political protests. It's a neopagan festival, a saint's feast day, and a day for organized labor. In many countries, it is a national holiday.
In medieval England, people would celebrate the start of spring by going out to the country or woods—"going a-maying"—and gathering greenery and flowers, or "bringing in the may."

Another English tradition is the maypole. Some towns had permanent maypoles that would stay up all year; others put up a new one each May. In any event, the pole would be hung with greenery and ribbons, brightly painted, and otherwise decorated, and served as a central point for the festivities.

One of the most popularly known May Day traditions is to hang a basket full of spring flowers on a neighbor's doorknob. The trick is you don't want the neighbor to see you. What a nice surprise when they opened the door.
This was a tradition that I always did growing up.

Spring Time Nest Bell Jar

For centuries, European and American gardeners used bell-shaped glass covers to protect delicate plants from harsh weather. This Bell Jar I purchased from
Williams-Sonoma complete with a bird’s nest filled with hand-painted faux eggs, downy feathers, twigs, flowers and greenery. It real adds a little touch of spring to our home. Since Mr.K doesn't get out to much I put It right where he could see It to brighten up his day. Both Mr.K and I have terrible allergies so I can't bring any flowers In so I thought this would be a great substitute.

I have some new designs I will be listing In my Etsy shop the next couple of days. I've been working diligently with my assistant " Maggie" If you remember her, Maggie the manniquinn we haven't click just yet, but we will.

In Celebration Of Earth Day

I know this Is a pretty long post but It has some great Information about going green. Lets all make the commitment today and save our earth.

10 Ways to Go Green and Save Green.

Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
Unplug appliances when you're not using them. Or, use a "smart" power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts "phantom" or "vampire" energy use.
Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.
Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying. If you must use a dryer, consider adding dryer balls to cut drying time.

Save water to save money.

Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too.
Install a low-flow showerhead. They don't cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment.
Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet. These inexpensive appliances conserve heat and water, while keeping water pressure high.
Plant drought-tolerant native plants in your garden. Many plants need minimal watering. Find out which occur naturally in your area.

Less gas = more money (and better health!).

Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity.
Consider telecommuting if you live far from your work. Or move closer. Even if this means paying more rent, it could save you money in the long term.
Lobby your local government to increase spending on sidewalks and bike lanes. With little cost, these improvements can pay huge dividends in bettering your health and reducing traffic.

Eat smart.

If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it's even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.
Buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy whenever you can. Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy.
Watch videos about why local food and sustainable seafood are so great.
Whatever your diet, eat low on the food chain [pdf]. This is especially true for seafood.

Skip the bottled water.

Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of container waste.
Bring a reusable water bottle, preferably aluminum rather than plastic, with you when traveling or at work.

Think before you buy.

Go online to find new or gently used secondhand products. Whether you've just moved or are looking to redecorate, consider a service like craigslist or FreeSharing to track down furniture, appliances, and other items cheaply or for free.
Check out garage sales, thrift stores, and consignment shops for clothing and other everyday items.
When making purchases, make sure you know what's "Good Stuff" and what isn't.

Borrow instead of buying.

Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books.

Buy in bulk. Purchasing food from bulk bins can save money and packaging.

Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products. You might pay more now, but you'll be happy when you don't have to replace items as frequently (and this means less waste!).

Keep electronics out of the trash.

Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.
Recycle your cell phone.
Ask your local government to set up an electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection event.

Make your own cleaning supplies.

The big secret: you can make very effective, non-toxic cleaning products whenever you need them. All you need are a few simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, and soap.
Making your own cleaning products saves money, time, and packaging-not to mention your indoor air quality.

I've searched and searched for the perfect little fairy door to put In my studio. I was going to wait and show you when I had It's permanent home but I just couldn't, It was just to cute not to share. Look how adorable the box looks with the pretty ribbon. I carefully unwrapped my little package and was absolutely thrilled at what was Inside. In the bottom of the box was a tiny little tricycle and some fairy dust to sprinkle around the door to make the fairies feel welcome. Now It may take a little time for them to appear In my studio so I will keep you posted on the activity. Placing a Fairy door In your home Is suppose to be good luck.
I purchased my fairy door from Red Shoes but In looking at the packaging I see that they have a shop here on Etsy at My Fairy Door . There are several shopes on Etsy that sell varies styles of fairy doors so If your In the mood to place one In your home there Is a nice selection just put Fairy Doors In the search and they will magically appear.

A Touch Of Winter

Remember the pretty little daffodils I posted about yesterday and said I wanted to get a picture of them because It was getting colder. Well this Is what I woke up to this morning In central Illinois. three inches of snow....yikes ! That Mother Nature sure likes to keep us on our toes. Although very pretty I would like my flowers back, please.

She loves the snow and was very excited to go out and play In It this morning. This Is good exercises for her. We have her on a diet, shhh, we don't talk about It. as you can see by the photo she hasn't missed to many meals or treat's. She Is a very spoiled girl.

A Touch Of Spring

I took these photos yesterday. It has been pretty chilly here the last couple of days and I was afraid I would wake up one morning and they would be droopy from the cold night temperatures. Redecorating

I spent sometime this week end redecorating a little. By that I mean hanging a few pictures. I've had these two pictures In different walls of my home and decided to move them. The first picture of the berries In the basket hung In my bedroom. Now I've moved It on the wall leading up to my studio right off my kitchen. So If I'm standing in the kitchen you can see this picture. It Is one of my favorites. Over the year's I've collected and framed many of the Holland Tulip Time prints. My sister lives In Holland Michigan and that Is how I originally started collecting them. This one Is done with a matte In buttercup that really looks nice with the tulip combination and the white frame. It use to hang In my enclosed front porch but I moved It In one of the rooms upstairs. I did move a few more thing's that I will share later this week.

Today I will be listing some new antique button ring's In my Etsy shop. I'm also working on a giveaway that will start this Thursday. Have a grand Monday,
